Abstract

Boundary element methods: tool design application R.E. Dippery, Jnr." & M.R. Torpey& * Mechanical Engineering Department, GMI Engineering & Management Institute, Flint, Michigan, USA ^ AlliedSignal, Inc., Troy, New York, USA ABSTRACT A coining process of sintered aircraft brake pads results in some pads (pieces) sticking to the coining insert (mold). Consequently, the piece is not removed by the punch, resulting in several possible problems ranging form process delay to tool failure. Boundary Element Methods (BEM) were selected as a computer-aided design tool to analyze the problem and investigate the problem to evaluate possible corrective action and redesign. This paper discusses the formulation of the model to study the problem and the results of the analyses. INTRODUCTION GMI-EMI has a unique program in which seniors write a thesis related to their co-operative work assignment as a requirement for graduation. This paper has been written to summarize work wh
