Abstract

Analysis of cavitation in dynamically loaded journal bearings using a boundary element method Q. Yu & T.G. Keith, Jr. Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Toledo, Toledo, Ohio 43606, USA ABSTRACT In this paper, Elrod's universal differential equation, which combines Reynolds equation with cavitation conditions, is numerically solved using a hybrid boundary element method. In order to obtain transient solutions, the squeeze term of the governing equation is approximated using a finite difference in time. Substitution of film rupture and reformation boundary conditions into the generalized boundary integral equation leads to an undetermined boundary problem. The boundary integral equation is united with coupled nonlinear equations which describe the motion of the journal. The system of equations is solved by means of an iterative boundary element method utilizing internal cell discretizations. The dynamic performance of the Ruston and Hornsby VEB diesel
