Abstract

BEM analysis of melting problems W. DeLima-Silva, Jnr. & L.C. Wrobel Wessex Institute of Technology, University of Portsmouth, Ashurst Lodge, Ashurst, ABSTRACT This paper presents a formulation of the BEM for multi-dimensional phase change problems using a time-dependent fundamental solution, a convolution-type time- marching scheme and a predictor-corrector iterative algorithm. The formulation can be applied to the cases of one or two phases, but special attention is given in this paper to one-phase melting problems. Results of some applications are included and compared to available analytical solutions. INTRODUCTION Problems of heat transfer with change of state are of importance in several branches of engineering. From the mathematical point of view, the inherent nonlinearity of such moving boundary problems poses significant theoretical dif- ficulties [1], [2], while their practical application generally requires a numerical method of solution [3].
